Case StudiesBARCLAYS BANK ON OUR QUICK RESPONSEThe client: Barclays Bank plc. A leading British bank with a worldwide reputation and hundreds of branches across the whole of the UK. The brief: The SDM team's reputation for quick responses to clients' needs was tested because they had to come up with a design idea in just four weeks. Barclays wanted a prototype for a mechanical quick deposit machine to be installed into their branches. For consistency's sake it needed to be similar in size, style and shape to the automatic teller machines already used in the branches. The quick deposit machine had to have a minimal amount of electronic communications because from the public's point of view it was a one-way operation - a receptacle for deposit envelopes containing paying-in slips and cheques. The SDM solution: Despite the machine being contained within the security area of the banking hall, the machines needed a high level of security of their own. SDM came up with a rolling drum technique in which moving parts, as well as electronics, were kept to a minimum. This reduced the possibility of malfunctions and kept maintenance costs down. An MDF prototype was built and submitted to the client. The result: Having had the design approved, SDM manufactured the first batch of 60 machines and this was followed by an order for a further 575 over the next six months. In total more than 800 machines have been manufactured for Barclays Bank by SDM. The benefits: SDM's seamless design-to-manufacture abilities meant the client was able to have the product well within the required time period. Also, as the designer and manufacturer with a full knowledge of the product, SDM was able to accept the contract to maintain the machines. The client said: "This contract has been our quickest installation and the results were well above our expectations" HELPING BRITISH TELECOM KEEP ITS COOLThe client: British Telecom plc (BT) - the UK's top telecommunications provider. The brief: BT required a thermostat to monitor sensitive and vital telephone exchange equipment which needs to be constantly cooled. The DEW solution: The team designed - from scratch - a digital thermostat and interface. Its complex design included a visual display and indicator, two output alarms, lamp test and a digital output. DEW also designed and tested an interface to accommodate when a number of thermostats would be required for the cooling units. Because DEW adhered so well to the client's brief, the prototype was quickly approved and put into manufacture. The benefits: DEW's wealth of experience in electronics meant the team was able immediately to come up with solutions to BT's requirements from the initial circuit board design through to the testing of the prototype model. DEW was then also able to initiate the manufacturing process of the approved design. The result: DEW has been manufacturing the thermostats and interface units for eight years and such has been the efficiency and robustness of the equipment that the whole of BT's network is now kept cool by them. |
